Critical Reflection

In my documentary excerpt, Home Cooking, I intended to capture what brings almost everyone together. In this case, it is cooking. I wanted to display that home cooking is a way to connect with others and build relationships. Whether it's cooking with family members or sharing a meal with friends,  food can bring people together. This being that no matter where you are, the taste of a home-cooked meal can bring you back to a place you hold close to your heart.

The entire series that my excerpt is based on aims to cover home cooking on many different levels. Furthermore, every episode displays a unique household that possesses different cultural traditions and beliefs alongside different social economic statuses. I believe that my documentary has the potential to represent these different social groups and certain social issues in various of different ways. To start, I can shed light on the diversity of food cultures and the significance they have on the traditions and values of different communities. This can be done by featuring dishes from different areas of the world and emphasizing certain techniques and ingredients used for each dish. This can help my audience understand the cultural significance and impact of food while also being able to appreciate the process and background of each dish.

My documentary can also address various amounts of social issues that correlate with food. These are social issues such as accessibility to nutritional and affordable meals, food sustainability, and mass food waste that is happening in the world. Showing the various amounts of healthy but affordable ingredients in each meal can help show that eating healthy doesn't always mean paying a large price. In my documentary, my mother Melissa Handley who is the home cook chef cooks herb-crusted sea bass with potatoes and haricot verts. Although this is more of a special dish that requires the price to be higher, the difference in price from having this at a restaurant vs. at home is extremely large. The meal Melissa cooked in the documentary would be around fifty-five dollars per person in a restaurant. But to cook at home, the total would come out to be around 55 dollars for an entire family. I do understand that this can still be a bit pricy and that is why the different episodes in the docu-series would aim to cover other social economic statuses. But the money you save by knowing how to cook this at home vs going to a restaurant is undeniable.

In my documentary, the elements of my productions all come together to create a consistent and cohesive brand that aims to project a warm feeling that brings people together alongside giving a very “lively” feel. To begin, my logo for Home Cooking is mainly an orange color. I used warm hues in the logo to emphasize the warm feeling that I wanted to display. One of the first things that come to mind when I think of home cooking is a dish that brings you back to a place of childhood, family, and love. A home-cooked meal made with love and passion is never going to be cold and passionless, it is going to be warm and vibrant. The first bite of that meal is supposed to feel like a warm welcome to a place that holds a deeper meaning in your heart.  To continue, the auditorial decision I made in my documentary helped to represent one of the major elements of my brand. The element being: extremely vibrant and lively. When picking music I went through a variety of different genres such as upbeat, lo-fi, jazz, etc. But for most of these except jazz to an extent, I felt as if they didn't match the culinary vibrant feel of my brand. For this, choosing music that is derived from the Bossa Nova genre (60’s Brazillian Jazz) for my documentary helped amplify the vibrant feel of my brand. The visual element, of course, is one of the most important factors that represent my brand. When filming and editing, I made sure to put an emphasis on the bright and colorful elements of the dish. From the bright greens of the herbs and haricot verts to the rich reds and oranges of the potatoes, all of these elements work together to represent the overall goal of my brand.

My project can engage with the audience in a plethora of ways. To begin, the overall brand of warmness and overall vibrant nature can help create an emotional connection between the piece and the audience. Two common feelings people associate home cooking with are comfort and nostalgia. By tapping into these emotions throughout the production of my brand and the usage of various sound and visual techniques, I am likely to capture the attention of my audience and create a source of engagement. My documentary also engages with the audience by presenting personal stories and memories that are present in the interviews of Melissa and Seth within the five-minute excerpt. This will help create a sense of familiarity and relatability within the audience which in return creates more engagement. The implementation of my social media site also helps engagement with the audience. Posting teasers, pictures, behind-the-scenes footage, and more all help to interact with the audience and keep them up to date with the production of the piece. Lastly, my magazine article serves as an additional tool to engage with my audience. By showing behind-the-scenes pictures and sharing the experiences of each member of the production, I am giving the audience a deeper understanding of my vision and the creative side of the project.

My research played an extremely important role in the making of all portions of my project. Through research, I gained a much deeper understanding of the conventions of cooking documentaries, magazines, and social media sites. For the interviews in my documentary, I decided to prioritize the emotional conventions commonly used in many other documentaries. Some food documentaries that inspired my production were “Cooked” on Netflix and “Paul Hollywood Eats Japan: Complete Series (Food And Cultures Documentary)” By Real Stories. Both of these documentaries helped me by showing me multiple different types of conventions used in the documentary world and specifically the food documentary world. I also skimmed through many different magazines to see what conventions are commonly used within magazine articles that I can implement within mine. Conventions such as numbers on the bottom of pages, the enlargement of certain quotes, and more can be seen in my magazine article were inspired by my research.

As my Aice Media A-level portfolio project comes to a wrap, I can confidently say that all components of my project help capture the true meaning behind home cooking and that cooking can truly bring people together. I believe my project also effectively maintains engagement within the audience, represents social groups and issues, and displays a consistent brand all while challenging the common conventions of documentaries and news articles.

Look Back On My Journey

As my Portfolio Project comes to an end, I wanted to reflect on my journey. Although tedious and stressful at times, the stressful times do not compare to the amount of fun this project was. Working with my mother and father for this production was an absolute privilege. I also gained a plethora of knowledge from my peers whenever we would have group discussions. This project was an amazing opportunity to express my creative side of me and I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to complete this endeavor. The next couple of posts will be my completed documentary excerpt, social media website, magazine article, and critical reflection. Enjoy!

Social Media Update

With the release of my project coming soon, I had to update the Social Media Page!

Music

During the editing process, I had to make sure the audio is well-implemented with few flaws. Making sure the audio matches the vibe of the visual aspects of the film was another challenge. I had to completely abandon the audio that I chose before editing and filming as it was not a great match with the video clips. At first, I was planning on using upbeat/lo-fi beats but soon realized that this wasn't the best choice during editing. I thought this because not only did the lo-fi beats I found sound a bit cheesy, but I also felt as if they didn't represent a culinary feeling. After some research, I decided to shift more into the jazz sphere and the Bossa Nova genre which is basically 60’s Brazilian jazz. I chose to use jazz music during the interviews as it is warmer, laid back, and relaxing which will ultimately not distract the viewers from what the person in the particular interview is saying. I used the Bossa Nova music for clips in which it is just foods/cooking. When there isn't dialogue, it opens the door to using more distracting and upbeat music that has a lot going on. I also feel that the sound derived from Bossa Nova matches the visual aspects of food and cooking. From my perspective, I see it as the bright and vibrant sounds of the genre match the bright and vibrant flavors and colors of the dish.

Editing

The past week, other than the brief filming of the interview with my dad, all I have been doing is editing my documentary. The due date is coming soon and I truly have been grinding to get this production done in a timely and orderly fashion. To be honest, I underestimated how long the editing process would take. Before editing, I thought it would only take a couple of days but after actually starting, I realized how much of a long and tedious process it is. To begin, I had to pick and choose the best clips from the hundreds I have filmed. Not only do they have to look nice, but they also have to fall into the plot line of the documentary so the whole production can run smoothly. I also had to make sure the clips fit the correct warm vibe I was looking for when creating a home cooking documentary.  Structuring the clips in a correct way to produce the most engagement out of the viewer is difficult as well. I had to make sure that certain clips were not too long so the viewer doesn't get bored or too short to the point where the viewer doesn't have enough time to indulge in what they are looking at. Although a long process and difficult one at times, I have also thoroughly enjoyed editing my documentary. It is extremely satisfying to see my vision unfold right in front of my eyes. Editing gives me the opportunity to express my creative side through meticulous and specific choices. This is the same for the other parts of this process as well. As I get close to finishing editing, I have become more and more excited to see how the final product will turn out.

Adding My Father To The Production

As I was editing my documentary, I realized that the only interview in my production was only of my mom. At first, I thought this would work out but after going over it again, I began to become a bit concerned that the content might start to feel repetitive or lacking in diversity. After contemplating whether or not to add an extra interview with someone other than my mom, I decided that adding an interview with my dad would be an effective way to put some variety into my production. After finalizing the plan to add my father to the documentary, I got right to work. The same day, I gave my dad some questions to go over to help him prepare for the interview, and right that night we filmed. Filming went very smoothly and he gave me a lot to work with. He answered the questions like we were having a conversation and had certain interviews rolling for a couple of minutes. Of course, I have to cut the interview down but the extra content definitely helped out a lot.  I firmly believed that adding my father's perspective into the mix will make the content more engaging for the viewer.

Social Media Update!

As I finish filming, It was time to load up the social media! I have recently updated my social media site on Instagram to update all the viewers. I even gave a little hint on when they should be expecting the production.

Time To Edit!

Right after finishing the filming process, I told myself I would not wait for a second to start editing. I know for a fact, that the editing process is the longest and most tedious part of the entire production. Especially with a documentary, I have to go through over 100+ videos and cut it down to only around 5 min of footage. I have started the organization process of my clips and picked out the ones I want to include in the documentary. After I organized, I have come to the point where I'm starting to put all the clips, interviews, and B roll footage together to make the final product. With that being said, I believe that this whole process should take me around a couple days to get done if I am fully locked in. There is no room for procrastination as the project is due April 13th! It's for sure time to get the job done and lock in! I am super excited to see how the entire documentary turns out after I'm done editing.

Filming!

Last Thursday, I filmed most of all B-Roll and Interview footage for my documentary. Although I filmed a little later than I wanted, I am relieved to get it done and get right to editing. Although it was a smooth filming process, the process was pretty long. We started around 7 PM and didn't finish the entire filming process until 11! It was pretty exhausting. But the good news is that it was still extremely fun to do and everyone had an extremely delicious meal to eat afterward.

Here are some pics of behind-the-scenes!

As I thought before, purchasing the tripod and the photo rig were a great addition to the entire process as they not only made filming easier but it also made it much smoother; mitigating some of the shaking that would have been more prevalent with just using the hand-held camera technique.

Group Discussion

In class today, three other peers and I had a small group discussion for around 30-35 minutes. It was beneficial and we all provided feedback as long as receiving feedback. I started off by asking everyone if I should use Adobe Primer Pro to edit my project instead of iMovie. All of them suggested against iMovie. Although iMovie can most definitely get the job done, Adobe Premier Pro is less buggy and will give me more space to edit how I want alongside the quality going up. At first, I was hesitant and asked if it was extremely hard to use and they all told me that after watching a quick twenty min tutorial, I should start to get the hang of it.

Then we all continued with our discussion by going through each other's blogs. I gave some suggestions to my peers and also received more feedback. When asked about the music, I was told I should focus on trying to avoid the top results shown for copyright-free music. Instead, I was told to dive deeper for higher quality music and I couldn't agree anymore. I was also told to focus heavily on making the vibe of my documentary more emotional. Remember that the main focus is my mother (the person who raised me), I should really focus on radiating a warm vibe. Alongside that, giving off a warm vibe truly matches the HOME side of home cooking and the stories behind each meal.

After this discussion, I gained a lot of useful feedback and thought it was extremely effective. Group discussions like these are truly what help push my project and ideas to the next level. Alongside being useful, talking about everyone's projects has made me extremely excited to view each documentary, music video, short film, and trailer/s that will be presented in this class.
